While larger organisations have had to report on their carbon emissions to meet legislative requirements for some time, smaller organisations generally haven’t met the thresholds for mandatory reporting.

However, for SMEs that sit in the supply chains of larger corporates or public sector organisations, things have changed. It’s becoming more common for small companies to have to evidence a commitment to calculating, reporting and reducing their carbon emissions over time.

In some instances, a Net Zero commitment in line with the Science Based Targets Initiatives (SBTi) is also a requirement alongside evidencing projects relating to circular economies, climate risk, biodiversity loss and social impacts.

And for organisation looking at B Corp certification or transitioning to the new standards, the Climate Action impact area means you’ll need to be able to calculate your carbon emissions so you can set reduction targets.
