Why Building the Future of Sustainability Should Start with LEGO (Not Another Slide Deck)

Let’s be honest for a second. The current conversation around climate change and social injustice is exhausting.

Don’t get me wrong. The challenges we’re up against are very serious. But somewhere along the line, the ways we talk about solving them became exhausting. If you left corporate life to build a business that actually does things differently, you probably didn’t do it just to exchange corporate red tape for sustainability overwhelm.

Our approach to shaping a better world doesn’t have to be rooted in doom-and-gloom data. Instead, it can be filled with positivity, hope, collaboration and creativity.

That’s why I decided to mix things up.

Ditching the Slide Decks for Bricks

Earlier this year, I ran an impact strategy workshop for a group of local small business founders. The goal was simple enough: map out the positive impact they want to have on their communities and the planet.

The execution, however, was anything but standard.

Instead of opening with heavy statistics on biodiversity loss and climate anxiety, the entire workshop was built around LEGO.

Studies show that adult play fosters creativity, mental flexibility, and deep social connection and I believe these are the exact ingredients we need when tackling society’s biggest problems. When you remove the pressure to deliver a polished, often stuffy, corporate workshop and step into creative flow, real breakthroughs happen.

What Happens When Organisations Play?

The results were pretty spectacular. A room full of relative strangers playing with preloved LEGO led to powerful, inspiring conversations around:

  • The power of community and collective action: Seeing how independent businesses can collaborate to shift local systems.
  • Nature regeneration and our connection to the planet: Moving past basic “eco-friendly” checkboxes into actual restoration for places we connect with.
  • A hopeful, tangible vision for a brighter future: Building what the future could look like if we get it right, brick by brick.

Suddenly, no one was bogged down by what’s going wrong. We were literally building a physical picture of what a hopeful future looks like.

Why Play Belongs in Impact & B Corp Strategy

When you run your own business, getting your team aligned on big-picture impact -whether that’s mapping out your B Corp journey, refining your mission, or setting impact goals – can feel like a heavy lift.

Following this workshop I went on to train as a LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) with the brilliant Lucy Hawthorne to learn more about the neuroscience behind this technique and I how I can use it in different scenarios with the organisations I work with.

Using LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) for sustainability changes the dynamic completely:

  • Everyone builds, everyone speaks: No single dominant voice takes over the room.
  • Metaphors over jargon: You don’t need a degree in climate science to model complex ideas. Physical bricks turn abstract goals into tangible models everyone can understand.
  • Energy over overwhelm: LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP)  swaps anxiety and dread for genuine excitement and alignment.

Try This in Your Next Team Meeting

Want to test the waters before booking a full session? Here’s a quick challenge for your next team check-in or strategy afternoon:

Bring a bit of play into the room, It could be a quick game, an art exercise, or yes, a bucket of LEGO. Ask your team to build or draw “What does sustainability in business mean to you.”

Give them five minutes, then let everyone share their story. Watch how quickly the energy in the room shifts from passive listening to creative spark.

FAQs About LEGO® Serious Play® Workshops

How does LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) help with business impact strategy?

Instead of sifting through lengthy reports, participants use hands-on building to map out sustainability challenges, model circular business ideas, and align on impact goals in a visual, highly collaborative way.

Is this only for small teams or startup founders?

Not at all. While it works very well for independent founders and mission-driven teams who want to avoid stiff corporate workshops, it’s brilliant for any group looking to break down silos and tackle impact goals creatively.

What do we actually walk away with after a workshop?

You walk away with clear, co-created impact priorities, a shared vision your team actually cares about, and practical next steps without the usual overwhelm.
